An SRV record, which stands for Service record, is a DNS entry that is used to define the servers which run a certain service for a domain name. In other words, you can use your domain name not just for an Internet site, but also for an instant messaging server, a video streaming host or perhaps a Voice-Over-IP server, for instance, while you still have a site with it. If you set up the SRV record, you can choose what Internet Protocol it will use, on which port the connection to the particular server is going to be established plus the priority and the weight of the record provided that there are several SRV records for the exact same service. The latter option will allow you to use different machines for load balancing and redundancy. Using this type of DNS records, you may use the same domain for a variety of purposes and even with different providers in case the same one can't provide all services you require.
